Man detained in Lviv region for desecrating statue of the Mother of God
A 33-year-old resident of Zhovkva poured tomato sauce over a statue of the Mother of God in the city square. He has been notified of suspicion of hooliganism and faces up to five years of restriction of liberty.
On April 29, 2026, law enforcement officers identified and detained a man involved in the desecration of a statue of the Mother of God in the city of Zhovkva, Lviv Region, ZAXID.NET reported.
According to officials, the incident occurred on April 28. While on patrol, police officers discovered the statue of the Mother of God on Vicheva Square covered in tomato sauce.
During investigative operations, the suspect was identified as a 33-year-old resident of Zhovkva, who explained his actions as hooliganism.
Investigators notified the man of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – hooliganism.
The article provides for punishment in the form of a fine, arrest for up to six months, or restriction of liberty for up to five years.
