The state must create a pantheon of outstanding Ukrainians, PO chief says
Officials in Kyiv have announced plans to rebury prominent historical figures on their native soil and are searching for a site for the future memorial.
The Ukrainian authorities have begun work on a project to create a national pantheon in the capital, Kyrylo Budanov said on his Facebook page. The initiative envisions bringing home the remains of prominent Ukrainians who are currently buried abroad. The head of the Presidential Office called it the state’s duty to those who fought for Ukraine’s independence.
The plan was discussed at a meeting attended by the leadership of the Verkhovna Rada, government representatives, and the Institute of National Memory. Budanov said that dozens of figures from different eras and professions should return home in accordance with their last wishes. The reburial process, he added, will require compliance with legal procedures and the consent of descendants. Officials are currently finalizing the list of names and selecting a specific site in Kyiv for the memorial complex.
The head of the Presidential Office said the completed proposals would be submitted to the president in the near future. In his view, the state will find the necessary resources to build the pantheon even during wartime. The program, he said, is intended to restore historical memory and the “truth about the past.”
Earlier, the UOJ reported that the Presidential Office chief had praised Filaret’s contribution to the “restoration of the OCU.”
