In Spain, 25-year-old girl undergoes euthanasia
Despite the father's attempts through the courts to prevent his daughter's suicide, Spanish doctors helped her die at the age of 25.
In Spain on March 26, 2026, Noelia Castillo Ramos underwent euthanasia after a two-year legal process. She had previously unsuccessfully attempted suicide after a severe injury. According to media reports, the procedure took place in a medical facility and lasted about 15 minutes.
It is reported that the girl grew up in Barcelona, her parents – former drug addicts – lost their housing and divorced. Noelia had been in shelters since childhood, and after reaching adulthood was subjected to violence in a state center. Later she attempted to end her life by jumping from the fifth floor, but survived, receiving severe injuries and becoming paralyzed.
In 2024, Noelia applied for euthanasia, which was approved by the relevant commission. Her father tried to challenge this decision in court, pointing to his daughter's condition and inability to make such decisions independently. In the legal proceedings, he was supported by the Catholic organization Abogados Cristianos.
Despite this, courts of various instances, including the Supreme Court of Catalonia, upheld the authorization. Attempts to appeal the decision in Spain's Supreme Court, Constitutional Court, and the European Court of Human Rights were unsuccessful.
On the day the procedure was performed, access to the patient was restricted. According to media reports, the girl's friend tried to get into the hospital to dissuade her, but medical staff did not allow her to enter.
In her last television interview, Noelia described the physical and emotional impact of her decision . She recounted a life marked by constant pain, isolation, and the inability to envision a future. “I simply want to leave in peace and stop suffering ,” she concluded.
As the UOJ wrote, in Canada a woman was subjected to euthanasia against her will after her husband's appeal.
