Restoration of the Grotto of the Nativity of Christ to begin in Bethlehem

The Jerusalem Patriarchate and the Custody of the Holy Land have announced announce the imminent commencement of restoration works in the Grotto of the Nativity, the hallowed site revered across Christendom as the place of the Incarnation of the Son of God took place. The Communiqué says the joint undertaking together with the brotherly cooperation of the apostolic Arminian orthodox Patriarchate proceeds Under the auspices of the Presidency of the State of Palestine, in accordance with the Presidential Decree on the Restoration of the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity for the year 2024 and with the historical Status Quo governing the Holy Places.

The restoration work has been entrusted to an Italian company that previously carried out the restoration of the Basilica of the Nativity of Christ. This, according to representatives of the Patriarchates, will ensure continuity in methods, craftsmanship and artistic approach to the shrine of exceptional spiritual and historical significance. The preparatory stage has been completed, and the start of work is expected in the near future.

In addition to restoring the Grotto itself, the project includes technical reinforcement of adjacent areas, which will preserve the architectural integrity of the complex and ensure its safety for numerous pilgrims.

The Jerusalem Patriarchate emphasizes that this project is an expression of the common Christian aspiration to preserve the spiritual, historical and cultural heritage of the Holy Land for future generations.

In the Grotto, the mystery of the Incarnation entered history and the Christian confession received its earthly beginning. To restore this holy place is to safeguard the continuity of faith, memory, and devotion in the land of the Nativity," the Communiqué states.
