Vance: The abortion debate is a choice between God and paganism
At the “March for Life” rally, the U.S. vice president said that defending unborn children is a matter of faithfulness to God’s design.
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, speaking at the 53rd annual “March for Life” rally on January 23, 2026, in Washington, said that today’s abortion debate goes far beyond politics and represents a civilizational choice between Christian values and paganism. The Christian Post reported this.
The March for Life is not just “about a political issue,” but rather, “whether we will remain a civilization under God or whether we ultimately return to the paganism that dominated the past,” Vance emphasized, addressing a crowd of thousands on the National Mall.
According to him, in the pre-Christian world the killing of children was considered normal. The vice president referred to archaeological findings that, he said, point to the mass deaths of infants in pagan societies.
“From the skeletons in brothels, to the child sacrifice of the Mayans, the mark of barbarism is that we treat babies like inconveniences to be discarded rather than the blessings to cherish that they are,” he noted.
Contrasting this with the Christian tradition, Vance cited Psalm 139, which says that a person is “fearfully and wonderfully made” by God. He stressed that Judeo-Christian values shaped a civilization in which human life is perceived as a gift.
In his remarks, the vice president also criticized modern ideological attitudes directed against the family and childbearing. “The far left in this country tells our young people that marriage and children are obstacles, that it's irresponsible, even immoral, because of climate change or some other reason. They tell us that life itself is a burden.”
“But we here at this march, we know it’s a lie. We know that life is a gift. We know that babies are precious,” Vance said.
He emphasized that the family is not only a source of a great joy, but also part of God’s design for for men and women, a design that extends outward from the family to neighborhoods and entire countries.
“You’re never going to find great meaning in a cubicle or in front of a computer screen,” he declared. “But you will find great meaning if you dedicate yourself to the creation and sustenance of human life,” the vice president said.
Organizers of the “March for Life” noted that J.D. Vance’s participation underscores the significance of the movement to defend unborn children. The event also featured a video address by President Donald Trump, and speakers included House Speaker Mike Johnson and a number of members of Congress.
The “March for Life” is the largest annual pro-life demonstration in the United States and is traditionally held around the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, which was overturned in 2022.
