Ban on full-face veil and tightened control over mosques proposed in Italy
The bill is aimed against "Islamic separatism" and provides for a ban on a full-face veil in public places.
On October 8, 2025, in Rome, the party of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, "Brothers of Italy", submitted to parliament a bill banning the wearing of the burqa, the niqab, and a full-face veil in public places, as well as strengthening control over mosque financing. This was reported by the agency ANSA.
The document, submitted to the Chamber of Deputies, provides for a ban on wearing garments that covers the face in public places, including educational institutions and government offices. The violation of the law will entail an administrative fine of €300 to €3,000 .
Additionally, the project proposes to tighten control over mosque financing and establish more transparent rules for donations to religious organizations. The law also includes provisions for strengthening responsibility for forced marriages.
The initiators emphasize that the law is not directed against religion, but against extremist manifestations and symbols, "contradicting the principles of the Italian Constitution".
The ruling coalition, where Giorgia Meloni's party holds key positions, has a parliamentary majority, which, according to experts, makes the chances of the bill being passed quite high. Meanwhile, in some Italian regions, such as Lombardy and Veneto, similar restrictions are already in place at the local level, reflecting a trend towards tightening policies on religious symbols and public safety.
