Moldovan Orthodox archbishop appeals to U.S. Vice President for support

Archbishop Markell stated that if the ruling regime wins the elections, the Orthodox Church of Moldova will face the threat of abolition.
On 22 September 2025, Archbishop Markell, in an online interview with American journalists and bloggers, spoke about the persecution of the Orthodox Church of Moldova by the ruling authorities and publicly appealed for support to U.S. Vice President J. D. Vance. The report was published on the official channel of the Bălți Eparchy of the Orthodox Church of Moldova.
“Honorable Vice President of the United States, Mr. Vance, the whole world knows that you stand for traditional values, the traditional family, and the Christian upbringing of the younger generation. In this sense, we are absolutely one with you,” the Archbishop said.
He emphasized that today Orthodox believers in Moldova are being persecuted because of their connection with the canonical Church. “If the ruling regime wins the elections, the Orthodox Church of Moldova will be under the threat of outright abolition,” Archbishop Markell noted.
He concluded his appeal with an open plea: “I ask you, honorable Vice President, to intervene. Help us defend our traditional Church.”
Earlier, the UOJ reported that President Sandu claimed ROC clergy are influencing elections by spreading propaganda.
