Orthodox Christians begin the Apostles’ Fast
The fast in honor of the Apostles Peter and Paul will last until July 12 – nearly four weeks.
On June 16, 2025, Orthodox Christians began the Apostles’ Fast, which will continue until July 12. This summer fast is dedicated to the memory of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and concludes on the eve of their feast day. It is one of the four major multi-day fasts in the Orthodox calendar.
The Apostles’ Fast always begins one week after the Feast of the Holy Trinity, which was celebrated this year on June 8. Its duration varies from one to six weeks depending on the date of Pascha. In 2025, the fast will last nearly four weeks.
The fast was established in honor of Saints Peter and Paul, who prepared for their missionary work through fasting and prayer. During this period, the faithful observe dietary restrictions and intensify their spiritual practices – prayer, repentance, and acts of charity.
The Apostles’ Fast is considered less strict than Great Lent. On weekdays, plant-based food is allowed, while on weekends, fish, vegetable oil, and wine are permitted. The fast will end on July 12 with the Feast of the Holy, Glorious and All-Praised Apostles, Peter and Paul.
