Archbishop of Sinai urges Greece to defend St. Catherine’s Monastery
The Archbishop believes the ancient monastery faces serious threats that could undermine its spiritual and legal legacy.
On June 13, 2025, Archbishop Damian of Sinai sent an official letter to the Speaker of the Greek Parliament, urging action to address the situation surrounding St. Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai, Orthodoxia News Agency reports.
In the letter, the Archbishop emphasized that this ancient holy site – founded fifteen centuries ago – is facing serious challenges that threaten both its spiritual and legal heritage.
“We are confident,” Archbishop Damian wrote, “that no court ruling can erase fifteen centuries of law and history, truth and civilization, or falsify a reality that was respected even by barbarian conquerors.”
He expressed gratitude for the actions taken by Greek authorities in defense of the rightful claims of the Archbishopric of Sinai at the international level, calling their stance “decisive” in safeguarding truth, history, and faith.
The Archbishop also noted that the Sinai Archbishopric is prepared to officially present all necessary documentation to defend the monastery from distortion and destruction.
Archbishop Damian expressed hope that the Greek Parliament will continue to uphold spiritual and historical values, and that future generations will recognize the significance of this struggle for a sacred site that remains a stronghold of faith and culture in the heart of Sinai.
