UK trans activists protest against biological definition of sex
The United Kingdom is returning to a traditional definition of sex, as a court has ruled that the term “woman” in law refers to biological sex.
On May 29, 2025, trans activists in the UK protested a court decision stating that a “woman” is a person with female biological sex. Many activists and advocates believe the ruling restricts the rights of transgender individuals, reports The European Conservative.
Previously, on April 16, 2025, the UK Supreme Court ruled that the terms “woman” and “sex” in the 2010 Equality Act refer exclusively to biological sex, thereby excluding transgender women from the legal definition of "woman."
Following the court’s decision, trans activists warned that the ruling could intensify discrimination and restrict transgender people's access to women’s spaces and services. Politicians and human rights advocates also voiced concern about the potential erosion of transgender rights in the UK.
In response, some institutions and organizations across the country have begun reviewing their policies toward transgender individuals, leading to heightened tensions and further protests from activists.
On June 1, 2025, the Football Association of England banned transgender women from participating in women’s teams, prompting public demonstrations and the organization of alternative tournaments in support of transgender players.
