Verkhovna Rada introduces mentoring for orphans

The Ukrainian Parliament adopted a bill on mentors for orphans. The draft amendments to the Law on ensuring organizational and legal conditions for social protection of orphans and children deprived of parental care №4784 was voted in favour by 231 MPs in the first reading, reports LІGA.net.

It is planned that mentoring is a voluntary activity for free, which aims to support the individual child and its preparation for independent living. The bill provides an agreement on mentoring between a mentor and the administration of the institution for orphans. A mentor can be an adult, able-bodied person who has undergone special training.

At the same time, control over observance of the rights of children will be carried out by the service for children. In case of a threat to the health and life of the child, the guardianship authority shall decide whether to remove the child immediately from the mentor and terminate the agreement on mentoring.

Recall, in 2008 the Parliament passed a bill that provides for additional types of state aid to families who adopt an orphan child.
