Vatican Secretary of State: radical nationalism is caused by inferiority complex
During his visit to Ukraine Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin told about the risk posed by nationalism and the need to fraternal and common humanism on the way to integration of Ukraine with Europe. It is reported by the Observer.
"Radical nationalism, justifying itself as a solely right manifestation of the national identity, is actually a fruit of the inferiority complex being incapable of embracing heterogeneity”, whereas accepting this heterogeneity is a sign of “mature nation”, declared Cardinal Pietro Parolin. “Never succumb to temptation of enclosing yourself into a peculiar ghetto in order not to muffle the calling of Ukraine towards integration with Europe – not only spiritual, but also cultural”, he said.
The Cardinal added that “nationalism differs from genuine love for your native land which is assonant with the ecclesiastic essence and missionary calling of the Church”. “Avoid a dangerous mole which is nationalism. It is a risk that might lead to losing a sense of reality in all its diversity, to removing yourself from fraternal and common humanism in a mutual interchange and discussion”, he underscored.
It is to be reminded that an official visit of Cardinal Parolin to Ukraine took place from June 16 to June 20.
